Prevent those Locks from Fading - Tips from Miguel Angarita

Monday, August 29, 2011

It may be close, but the sun hasn't set on summer yet.  And while we're soaking up every little last bit of warm weather, our hair color might be soaking it up too - and not in a good way.  Miguel Angarita, colorist and educator specializing in balayage/hair painting and the ever popular "ombre effect," from mizu new york offers the below tips to prevent fading and keeping you from an extra trip to the salon!

Blondes – Blondes have it easy during the summertime because it’s the best time for them to embrace the sun and add some natural highlights! Absorbing the sun’s natural rays helps the highlighted areas of your hair take on a real brightness giving you that “sun kissed hair” everyone talks about. Make sure you still use something with UV protection before you step outside to keep your color vibrant and not brassy.

Miguel Recommends: Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray

Brunettes – Brunettes tend to fade into warm or brassy tones, especially when they are exposed to the sun. You can prevent this by using a leave-in product that has UV Protection. These sprays or creams also contain conditioning agents so they have dual benefits. Use it before you step out into the sun so you can moisturize and protect your hair all at once!

Miguel Recommends: Oribe Supershine

Reds - To avoid your color fading all together go for a deeper red as they will last longer during the summer. Try to shampoo less often and make sure your products are free of sulfates and sodium chloride. If you don’t mind your color fading a bit, go for a brighter, copper tone; they fade beautifully in the sun! You can also add highlights, which will give you a softer look. To keep reds from fading it is really best to stay out of the sun. Pick up a chic hat and/or scarf and throw it on anytime you head outdoors!

Miguel Recommends: Sojourn Colour Preserve Shampoo and Conditioner

Brow Shade 101 with Brett Freedman

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Isn't it amazing how something as small as our brows can cause such big headaches in regards to our pretty little faces?  And even though we may choose to believe otherwise, show stopping brows don't just happen from plucking or waxing.  With that being said, how much thought do you actually put into your brow fillers?  Is it really as simple as trying to match a shade to your brow color?  Not so says Brett Freedman, celeb makeup artist and brow guru, who is fortunately on our side helping us decipher what shades to use as fill-ins.

Check out VanityMark.com for Brett's video tips on fill-in decision making, because as well all know, picking the perfect shade isn't as easy at it seems.

Happy filling!

Planet-Friendly Swimwear - It's Finally Here!

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

We're hearing a lot about "green," eco-conscious, etc. these days, but in the fashion world, there still isn't a lot being offered that not only looks good but allows us to feel good about wearing it.

That is changing little by little with the help of companies like AQUA GREEN who recently introduced their planet-friendly swim line ECO SWIM.  Made right here in the US of A and from fabrics made of recycled nylon, polyester and cotton as well as 100% recycled plastic bags and hangers, they truly are trying to make a difference.

The company hasn't just stopped at their green efforts at manufacturing and materials but have also funded clean-up projects.  Their first clean up removed 615 pounds of trash from the Delaware River!

Adoring Sasha Rhett's Fall Collection

Monday, August 15, 2011

While sadly, August signifies the conclusion of summer, there are some joys I get out of month eight.  Namely, the fall collections that come pouring out like ants at a picnic!  One we're suprisingly excited about?  Sasha Rhett's Toile Collection for Fall 2011 - a surprise because, well, I'm not a watch person.  Who needs a watch when your fingers are glued to your cell the entire day?  So maybe I don't "need" one, but the Gold Round Watch with Double Wrap Strap in Orange Toile certainly makes me want one!  Orange is so of-the-moment and the gold face and double strap make this is perfect option for every day.  The entire collection (between $199 and $249) is available at SashaRhett.com.

Brett Freedman's Beauty Battleship - Teen Choice Awards Addition!

Friday, August 12, 2011

The youth were alive and well at the Teen Choice Awards, and below, our pal Brett Freedman brings us his top hits and misses in the latest installment of Brett's Beauty Battleship.

Direct Hit! Lucy Hale is so in step with what's happening in make-up right now. Love the sheer base, super soft, fleshy blush and a gorgeous 'barely there but def there' pink lemonade lip glaze. This takes your focus right where Lucy wants it: on her gorgeous eyes and pristinely tailored brows. Lashes curled to perfection that picket fence across her lids and have a touch of sheer color, similar to watercolors, not oil paints. The hair feels like an updated Veronica Lake. Deconstructed and tucked tastefully behind one ear gives the look a slightly classic Hollywood vibe...yet young and fresh. Brava Lucy, I salute you!

Near Miss! Zoe Saldana was so great in Avatar and usually nails it on the red carpet! Here's what put her in the brig: Waxy/too reddish brown fill in on the brows and hair that teeters on sausage curls. What I like: great, golden pink lip color, but why the super bronzy shadow? Something in a sheer, shimmery pewter could have lightened up the whole look making it season appropriate...or go a bit more golden on the lip and do a summer tan, neutrals thing.

The Fix: Zoe needs to have her make-up person switch to a powder for brows (or a pencil to powder formula, like my Vanitymark...smile). Body heat makes waxy formula pencils heat up and get shiny on oilier skins. Also, choose a shade that's fleshier, more chocolate-y than auburn. I'd use my Dark Choco on her. You want a sueded finish on brows to look most natural. Hair: just brush through a touch to look more tousled than piecey. This type of crisp curl feels very American Idol to me...not soft fashion. Zoe, I'm giving you a weekend pass to pow-wow with your glam squad for your next sail down the red carpet!

Sweetheart, you sank! This pains me to put my gal Fergie below deck ;-( ! But where to begin?! Okay, Fergie Ferg...let's start with the spray tan. There was a time when it was so fashionable to sport an obvious faux-glow. That time was 2006. Five years later it's landlocked. I was thinking maybe if she were brunette it wouldn't have been such a misstep, less glaring, but still wrong. I'm all for a spray tan, but you really have to find the formula that’s right for you and your skin. It's trial and error for sure, and best to error on a Tuesday, shopping at Kitson rather than Sunday on the red carpet. Too blonde hair. There's a point where a blonde shade literally looks like it hurts. I'd say E.T. would put his finger on those ends and say "Ouch".

The Fix: No time for a proper spray tan? Bronze up with a deeper foundation. That way it always looks fleshy and real. That's what I do with my actresses. Warm up that blonde. You want to look beachy and sexy, not like a real housewife from Bev Hills. I will say, I do love that golden apricot lip gloss...so I'll throw ya' a life preserver, kitten!

Same ship, different day!  I heart me some Taylor Swift and Avril. I applaud that TS tried to step out of her beauty rut with a touch of colored shadow. But it didn't come off as stylish to me, it comes off like an addition to her mainstay eye look. We all know the Swift drill: black liquid liner swept out eye, crisp lashes, cotton candy blush and curled hair that's always side swept.

Ms. Lavigne: hair parted down the middle, ironed stick-straight. Her big glam surprise: she didn't clip in her bright pink extension behind her right ear. I'm a fan of “If it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I just feel these true creatives would have a touch more fun with her look. They're dangerously close to becoming the tween set's own Goldie Hawn! Okay gals, let's meet in the galley and have a chat!

The Depilar System Lets You Say "So Long" to Unwanted Hair

We have it everywhere it seems...unwanted hair.  And it seems we'll go to any expense to eliminate it, only to find the treatments are either too expensive or don't really work that well.

However, there is something new on the market you may want to try!  Depilar System is an enzyme based hair removal treatment that that is performed immediately after waxing - working on all sexes, races, hair colors and types.  The enhanced gel formula targets and destroys open-and-empty hair follicles and is actually more effective and less expensive than laser, IPL and electrolysis.  Taking approximately 1-10 minutes to treat (depending on the target area), and regular treatments every 4-6 weeks over 12-24 month period are recommended to effectively destroy all hair cells.  Gaining popularity nationwide at top spas, visit DepilarSystem.com to find a location near you or for more info.

Get the Look: Bianca Kahlich of 30 Minutes or Less

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

The hottest stars and newcomers were all present at last night's premiere of 30 Minutes or Less, including one of its stars, Bianca Kahlich.  Hollywood makeup artist Brett Freedman tended to the actress's makeup, creating a natural yet elegant look with a touch of edge in her pink, pouty lip.  Below, Brett shares his secrets for achieving Bianca's fab look!

In the new movie, 30 Minutes or Less, starlet Bianca Kajlich plays a stripper named Juicy. Since she's kind of in-your-face trashy in the film, Bianca decided to pare down her look and give a touch of elegance for the movie's premiere. Here's what I did, and why:

Moisturizer: Dermalogica oil free. I heart this sheer but uber moisturizing prep for skin.
Base: Make Up Forever's HD mixed with a touch of Bonne Bell bronzer. I wanted a moveable, sheer coverage with a little glow of warmth. Bianca had gotten some sun and since she was showing a lot of skin I thought it best to amp it up on her face, too.
Concealer: Laura Mercier Camouflage. Love the way this palette-like cover up brightens under eyes and dodges spots.
Blush: Bonne Bell bronzer with Maybelline's Soft Plum Dream Mousse cheek color on apples/tops of cheeks to give a healthy glow to her skin.
Eyeshadow: L’Oreal Infinite Wear quad in Landscape and Benefit's High Beam. The quad: a nice array of neutrals. I wanted her eyes to look vivid, but not distract from the sheer pop of color I planned to give her lips. I used the medium brown in her crease and to define her bottom lash line. I then went in with the darkest shade and sculpted out her crease. I used High Beam on Bianca's brow bone and around her tear duct to catch light and add dewiness.
Eye Liner: Shiseido liquid liner felt tip pen. I mainly used this to dot in between Bianca's lashes and very close to the lash line. I wanted the drama of the eyes to mainly be about the lashes.
Mascara: Benefit's They're Real. Love this mascara for Bianca's lashes! It makes them so long and lush. I applied 3 coats to the top and one on the bottom just to anchor the look.
Lashes: Ardell individuals. I mixed short and medium. I started mid eye to the outer corner with 5 short sprigs picket fenced across. I then added 3 medium to the ends to bump up Bianca's already thick fringe.
Brows: Vanitymark Ultra-Brow powder in Milk Choco. I gave Bianca's arches ultimate polish by filling out her brow line up and out to give classic Hollywood glam. I like a softer brown on Bianca because it's lighter than her brow hairs, so it never looks obvious or filled in.
Lips: Benefit's gloss in Kiss Me. LOVE this unusual, electric lavender shade. I thought it was the perfect 'pink with an edge'. It being a very young Hollywood premiere, I figured something a little left of center, color wise, would fly nicely.
Body: Vanitymark's Shimmerskin body glisten. Since Bianca has such great skin I thought it would be amazing to just give a sheer, shimmery amp up. I sprayed over all exposed skin to give her body a dewy, 'new car' finish. Smile!

A Must-Have: Rimmel's Fix and Perfect Foundation Primer

It happens to all of us from time to time - we run out of something "important," are short on cash  (or time) and - gasp - have to try something new.  Aside from that drama, we have to find it at the nearest drugstore.

This was the situation I found myself in not too long ago.  Out of my high-end primer and really wanting something to help me look fabulous in the heat, I found myself having to "settle" with Rimmel's Fix and Perfect Foundation Primer....or so I thought.  The truth is, this is the first primer I've used that actually works for me and allowing me to visably see the promised results - a more even tone, reduced appearance of pores and gives my makeup something to adhere to.  Prior to this, I've went from one high-end primer to the next, liking each for something different, but not necessarily sold on any one brand.  Until now.

Retailing for around just $7, this is a can't miss!

Get Interactive with Coffey Buzz!

Monday, August 8, 2011

Ahhh technology - we love it!  And even when it's not cooperating and we tell everyone how much we hate it, we still love it...kind of like men - ba dum dum...but I digress.  So where exactly would we be without technology - more specifically our beloved internet?  Anymore, everything is done online, including one of my favorite online activities shopping - which is why I love Coffey Buzz, an interactive lifestyle website airing webisodes that take online shopping to a whole new level.  The webisodes aren't just fun to watch, but viewers can literally click on anything they see to learn more about it, including its buying location.   And when I say anything, I actually mean absolutely everything - from the decor in the background to the necklace host Lissa Coffey happens to be wearing.

Created by brothers David and Charles Shaughnessy (Days of our Lives, The Nanny) the webisodes are short and informative and regardless of whether you're "shopping" you'll at the very least, enjoy the the show.  Below, we were fortunate enough to pick the brain of co-creator Charles Shaughnessy and got his thoughts on Coffey Buzz, so read on internet enthusiasts, and be sure to visit CoffeyBuzz.com to catch the current and archived webisodes for yourself!

How did the concept for Coffey Buzz evolve?  David and I were introduced to the owners of Hyperspots, who developed a brilliant interactive technology.  In affect, it was a click and buy solution to the revenue issue.  Coffey Buzz is an online magazine show that gave an opportunity to introduce products and services in an amusing and creative format.

Have you worked with your brother before - does working with family present any challenges?  We've made a few pilots/demos that you can find on Busstop 31 YouTube channel.  Redship is about an LAFD helicopter pilot and Tea and Crumpet, a family with an unusual family business.  Sometimes a family dynamic for an agenda will intrude and sometimes it will facilitate a great working relationship.

Obviously, either gender is welcome to watch the Coffey Buzz webisodes, but I'm sure you have a lot of females in your audience.  Have you learned anything new about the female world since it started?  You're absolutely right Laura!  The audience is primarily women, which was what we were looking for.  When we have a sports show introduction, I will let you know!

Do you have a favorite episode thus far?  I thought the Pet Hotel was very cute and the Home Office had some great gadgets, but it's hard to pick any one favorite.  I love them all!

How is working behind the scenes different from working in front of the camera?  It's much harder (laughs)!

Dita Von Teese Launches Cointreau® MargaDita

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Dallas was sizzling last week, and not just because of soaring summer temps.  Dita Von Teese, Cointreau® Brand Ambassador and International Queen of Burlesque officially launched her latest namesake cocktail, the Cointreau® MargaDita with a sizzling summer soiree at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

In a vibrantly colored vintage dress accented with a flowing green and yellow sash, Dita completed her look by donning custom-made Christian Louboutin heels paired with a feathered purse, also from Louboutin.

Over 150 party-goers were treated to delectable cocktails prepared by The Mansion Bar's head mixologist Rocco Milano, including Dita's signature drink, the Cointreau® MargaDita, as well as other Cointreau® sips - the original Side Car and the specially-created Deconstructed Cosmopolitan - molecular spheres of the traditional cocktail presented on a serving spoon.  In addition, guests enjoyed the evening with hors d'oeuvres of goat cheese-stuffed gougeres with piquillo and basil, smoked short rib tostados with chipotle cream and cilantro and shrimp and spicy black bean skewers - which perfectly complemented the spicy and sweet MargaDita.

According to Dita, "The Cointreau® MargaDita is a tantalizing haute-cocktail with a spicy twist."

Cointreau® MargaDita Recipe
1 oz Cointreau®
1 oz Silver Tequila
1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 oz Monin Rose Syrup
1 pinch Chipotle Spice

Mix all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.  Shake vigorously and pour into a chilled coup glass.  Garnish with Yellow Rose of Texas.  For an added kick, add a chipotle and salt rim.

Summer Hair Care Tips from Paul Cucinello

No doubt about it, this summer's heat and humidity has been brutal.  And when you couple that with sun, salt and chlorine, your locks have really taken a beating as well.  Below, Paul Cucinello, celeb hairstylist and Creative Director at the swanky Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea gives his must-try products from the Ecru haircare line, to help protect and nourish our hair:

Shine On  Chemicals and free radicals from the pool, sun, salt water, and air conditioning can damage cuticles and dull the hair. Repair and replenish summer-damaged hair and use a shine treatment to infuse locks with protein-building complexes. Try ECRU New York Acacia Protein Masque ($25). Formulated with Acacia Collagen, sunflower and grape seed oils, shea butter and marine extracts, this intense hair masque penetrates deep into the hair shaft to restore and renew dry, damaged hair – revealing gorgeous locks full of shine!

Cool Down and Lock It Up  Before getting out of the shower, run your hair under the coldest water you can tolerate for a few seconds. The icy blast of cold water will lock cuticles shut, leaving your strands super shiny like Jennifer Anniston’s.

Beat the Heat  Avoid heat-styling as often as possible during the summer months. After washing your hair, wring out any extra moisture with a towel and allow your hair to air dry before blow-drying. Cutting back on your use of hot tools such as a blow dryer and flat iron will help reduce damage. Be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to treat dry, strawlike hair. Try ECRU New York Luxe Treatment Shampoo ($22) and ECRU New York Protective Silk Conditioner ($22) to restore moisture and provide superior conditioning leaving hair beautiful and healthy.
Poolside Hair Repair  When planning a day at the beach or the pool, be sure to pack in your beach bag a leave-in conditioner along with a wide tooth comb. Try ECRU New York Silk Nourishing Spray ($24) to instantly detangle hair – salt and chlorine create major knots – and provide intense hydration.

Dr.'s Remedy® Nail Polish - The Healthy Alternative to Pretty Nails

Monday, August 1, 2011

Polish and pedi's go together in summer like red soles and Louboutins - it all just fits.  And since summer isn't over, we were thrilled to try the summer shades from Dr's Remedy®, doctor-inspired cosmetics dedicated to using clean, hypoallergenic ingredients.  The healthier approach to nail decor, the line proves invaluable to anyone suffering from nail fungus, brittle or discolored nails, allergic to standard polish chemicals, or are pregnant.  And I hate to sound like an infomercial, but, that's not all!  The polish is also enriched with antifungal ingredients like tea tree oil, garlic bulb extract, vitamins C and E and wheat protein.  But wait, there's more!  It's also the first-ever nail polish on the market to be approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

My favorite (Tranquil Tangerine) was a surprise to me.  You see, I'm a red girl when it comes to polish - from Fire Engine to Cha-Ching Cherry, and thought I always would be.  But you know, tangerines, oranges and corals are so hot right now, I thought I'd give it a try.  Truth be told, my typical red now has Tranquil Tangerine hot on its tail in terms of my "go-to."

The 5 summer shades ($17 each) are available, along with their other great colors, at RemedyNails.com
