Big Rich Texas’s Bon Blossman: Not Just a Pretty Face

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Bonne and WhitneySure you see one side of the Dallas firecracker on The Style Network’s Big Rich Texas, but how well do you really know Dr. (yes, Dr.) Bon Blossman?  We asked if she feels she’s portrayed accurately on the hit show, and she says emphatically, “No!”  At least, not 100% of the time.  So what else is there to possibly know about the reality star?  She fills us in below, and for more on Dr. Bon and daughter Whitney, don’t miss our Q&A with the pair!

“I don't like showing my true academic colors when I am talking or interacting with others on a social level and I definitely think this shows through on camera.  I have sat through many conversations about layman's science without revealing I had a PhD and was a scientist. Why would I do that?  Well, I don't pretend to be or act like I am superior to others in any manner. If my expertise is warranted, I will come through, however, but only in the proper setting.  I don't tell people about myself unless they ask.

I do regret that they never filmed me teaching at UNT.  They were going to film my Biochemistry lecture, but it didn't happen. Not that the world would want to be bored...uh, hmm...even I can make Biochemistry fun!  But being a professor is only part time and I actually didn't even want it to be mentioned on the show. I have taught for 17 years and the students love me so I just can't quit. Sad to say, this might be my final semester due to time. I have been trying to quit for about 5-6 years but my student evaluations and end of semester emails from my students whom I adore keep me coming back each semester.

The film crews were going to also film a book signing of my newest novel, 614 Scarlet Ct.  That also fell through the cracks.  The biggest part about what I do is writing - it's how I support my entire family but sad to say, most viewers don't even realize it. I use underlying science in my books as well so I incorporate my PhD education.  One of my murder mystery parties was highlighted in episode four.  That was from one of my companies, My Mystery Party which is an international murder mystery game and scavenger hunt party site. We sell instantly downloadable games and boxed sets all over the world!  But lesson learned, you don't invite your enemy to your party!

I have also written The Official Party Host Handbook.  I'm not sure why I wasn't highlighted this season as 'THE' party host?  During the filming season, I hosted a major event for my son's 16th birthday - Zakkapalooza.  The event definitely highlighted my party hosting skills as it was a 'to die for' amazing party full of wonderful memories.  The guests from the sweet sixteen party in the next ballroom actually rushed over to join my son's group!  But again, the camera crews fell through and didn't make it to the event.  I think Zakkapalooza was worthy of one of those sweet sixteen shows, actually.  Sigh...

In addition to multiple businesses and endeavors, my family has an alternative rock band.  I play the bass guitar and sing back up vocals, my husband plays lead guitar, my son is a child prodigy of a drummer and Whitney is potentially working her way into playing rhythm guitar.  Right now, our best friend Scot is the lead singer.  We're not great (yet), but we have a lot of fun.  We actually plan to make an appearance one day when we can finally get a set list together that we can all agree upon! It is such a struggle...

Also, my husband and I make up the group Party of 2. We are a musical group that publishes seasonal dance party mix CDs. We have a recording studio in our home - you didn't know that, did you?  We have released the Monstrous Halloween Dance Party Mix CD and are about to release our Christmas CD by November.   My son Zakkem is a dub-step DJ in the making and is collaborating with us on one of our songs.  Whitney is also an aspiring rap artist and she too will be featured on one of our songs.  We are about to release our first non-seasonal dance mix and will be giving a large portion of the proceeds to The Trevor Project - a foundation established for the prevention of teen suicides. This is a charity that Whit and I are very passionate about.

Last, my son Zakkem and I take comedy courses at the local Improv theater.  I am learning to do standup with my 16 year old son.  He's the one who deserves to be on a comedy stage...me....not so much but at least I try.

With all of that said, if I am asked to continue as a cast member in additional seasons, I think I have more to offer. We also have some charitable events that Whit and I are planning and / or participating in as well as our other endeavors.  My house never sleeps.”

Two Masks you Must Try!

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

The task to maintain beauty is never-ending.  And with the wide array of products we see on the market, it’s hard to differentiate the ones that inevitably bomb from the ones that are the bomb.  Regarding masks, I’m a bit of mask-jumper.  Constantly floating from one to another hoping to find one that I like so much I actually remember to use it the next week.  With that being said, I obviously jumped at the chance to sample two masks from well respected brands WEI and Cures by AvancĂ©.  Needless to say, I now look forward to my Monday Night Mask Session…no reminder alarm necessary!

WeiCraving a little luxury as you purify your complexion?  Look no further than WEI Beauty Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask.  Individual pods contain more than enough of the velvety smooth milk-chocolate colored mask which contains Golden Root extract and China Clay.  More then just “fancy” ingredients, Golden Root is an exceptionally powerful antioxidant that keeps skin looking young and smooth and counteracts the oxidative causes of cell damage.  China Clay absorbs toxins, dirt and removes dead cells.  While you could open up a pod and slather it on with your fingers, the included application brush is a dream – almost making me forget I was in my bathroom and not in some fabulous spa!

The mask does go on incredibly smooth and its amazing light cooling feeling left me calm and relaxed.  After the 10 minutes the instructions say to leave it on for, my skin was definitely smooth, although I can’t say it was more clear than before.  However, even the next morning, my face had a suppleness that I can’t say it possessed in awhile.  My verdict?  A must-try!  $42 for the set of 8 pods and brush at WEIBeauty.com.

Anti Acne MaskNext up, Cures by AvancĂ© Anti-Acne Mask – part of the Cures answer to treat the root cause of the condition, therefore offering long-term results.  Aimed at helping to eliminate blackheads, congested skin and oily acne this mask’s texture reminds me of a whipped frosting – so lightweight and creamy all at the same time – it doesn’t feel like a mask at all.  Formulated with Camphor Extracts to help purify skin, the cooling, refreshing mask also temporarily relieves sinus pressure and puffiness around they eyes.

I first tried this when I was PMS’ing and dealing with unwanted breakouts.  It wasn’t like I washed the mask off and poof, zits-be-gone, but it did help soothe the irritations and, while I’m no scientist, I’m convinced it helped minimize Round 2 of my monthly guests from forming.  I liked the scent, even though it did faintly remind me of Vicks.  I know that fact might make you reconsider your desire for it, but it shouldn’t.  Hands down, this was the most refreshing mask I’ve ever tried.  I used it again the next week when I was sick for it’s power to temporarily relieve sinus pressure and puffiness around the eyes.  I loved it – a godsend for the face!  $32 at CuresByAvance.com.

Brett’s Beauty Battleship–Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Edition

They seemingly have it all, including a ticket to one of the most fresh-faced soirees in town, the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party.  Some of the hottest rising stars in H-Town came out to celebrate and while gorge looks were among them, sadly, there were those who made us want to jump ship.  Below, celeb makeup artist Brett Freedman has the scoop - those who made him raise his sail, sunk his jump and nearly made a hit in this edition of Brett’s Beauty Battlship!

DIRECT HIT!
Wow...a tie! Two gals rocked the red carpet with totally different, yet spot on looks. Modern Family's Sarah Hyland gave us tawny skin, a strong lash and beautifully blended neutral eye with shimmering highlights. Love the understated golden apricot mouth. Hair was sleek but casually side parted with a tousled off center bun in the back. I love that she went straight with the hair, so different than her character on the show. Great brow that's nice and milk chocolate-y, not too dark.Gorgeous.

Starlet Skyler Samuels looked right on trend with the bold mouth and strong lash line. The power of her look is the fact she kept the rest of her makeup very minimal. A soft pink cheek and sleekly tailored brows set her look sailing!

Sarah and Skyler

NEAR MISS!
Prep the life raft for starlet Zoey Deutch! She almost nailed it. I like the idea of going very sleek and a touch retro with a very graphic dress. Hair wise, I love the idea. Very Barbie, and it works. The makeup (in concept) is smart and fashion-y but the execution is where it shipwrecked.

The fix: Love the mauve lip to draw attention to the swept up eye and strong brow but why the copper shadow? It literally looks like it landed on her face from another planet. You have such a cool toned, 60's vibe, why not stay with that in the eye makeup? What if you kept the shadow the same shape but used cooler toned taupes and pewters? That would bring this whole look together. Also, watch blush placement. It's a sweet color but placed too low. If you want to bring out the cheek by shading under the cheekbone, use something fleshier. This look took on water...but didn't totally sink!

Zoey

SORRY HONEY, YOU SUNK!
Let me start this with this: I heart the 80's. I love that the kids are embracing it and enjoying it. That being said...Emily Osment 'tried something' and it didn't work. Overall, it was just too 'theme-y'. The hair to one side, the pouf up off the hairline and the bouncy waves. Very fun-loving and I applaud that but mixed with silvery pink lips, rug burn blush, vivid eyes and very filled in brow, it's exhausting. You need to give the viewer's eye somewhere to rest. First, blondes have to be careful with bright or obvious makeup. Keep in mind where you are going. It's a Teen Vogue party. Not exactly the place to do something so costume-y and lightweight.

The fix: Abandon the 80's vibe completely. If you're definitely going to do the dress w/the feathers, go for a simpler earring. Do a very textured, brushed out Veronica Lake wave with a slightly off center part (to keep the face looking slim). Stay with a pink, but do a cream finish (non metallic) fushia. Amp up the lashes and go minimal with the liner. Make it a lip and lash story. Emily's brows have such a great shape, lighten up the fill in so we can see the hairs...or at least the texture. More modern, fresher!

Daphne Guinness Exhibition Opening Reception Sponsored by Kim Crawford Wines

Friday, September 23, 2011

Touted as one of today’s most original fashion icons, Daphne Guinness is now being celebrated as the subject of The Museum at FIT’s new exhibition, Daphne Guinness, which opened mid-September and continues through January 7th.

Since Guinness has a flair for the grandeur, you would expect nothing less than an opening reception to exude the same sense of panache.  Kim Crawford Wines accomplished the task as the fashionista celebrated with her favorite fellow fashion icons which included Oscar de La Renta, Valentino, Zac Posen and Christian Siriano.  Not too shabby a guest list!

While sipping sauvignon blanc the guests ogled approximately 100 garments and accessories from Guinness’s personal collection which boasts of high-end style: Chanel, Nina Ricci, Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Valentino, Gareth Pugh, Tom Ford and Rick Owens.

Ms. Guinness herself dazzled with her platinum-and-black striped hair, towering ten-inch heels, and chrome colored sequined dress from 22 year old fashion world newbie Hogan McLaughlin.

“She is one of the – if not the – most stylish women living,” said designer and film director Tom Ford.  And although serving as the inspiration for some of the world’s greatest couturiers, from Karl Lagerfeld to Valentino, Guinness insists she is “not a muse,” but more like “a bee” flitting from one designer to another, which is proven by the array of designers on display.

One of the many highlights to the exhibition is the wide range of extraordinary accessories, many of which were created in collaboration with Guinness.  These include Philip Treacy’s hats and Shaun Leane’s “armor” jewerly, not to mention towering platform shoes made especially for her by Christian Louboutin and Noritaka Tatehana.

Perez Hilton Celebrates with MARTINI Moscato d'Asti

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Love him or hate him (since he's not said a word about me, I happen to love him), the man can throw a shin-dig! Perez Hilton, celeb blogger, television personality and author, celebrated his book launch in his hometown of Miami Beach last Friday night (key Katy Perry here).

The Eden Roc Renaissance served as the venue for the intimate cocktail party and book-signing event sponsored by MARTINI Moscato d'Asti. Guests joined the star to launch his newest children's title, The Boy With Pink Hair while sipping the evening's signature drink, the MARTINI Dolce La Poire and nibbling on wild mushroom crostini, beef carpaccio and mini tiramisu dessert shots.

The guest list included Miami-based notables including Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Emilio Estefan, Deco Drive co-host Louis Aguirre and Real Housewives of Miami cast members Marysol Patton, Lea Black and Adriana de Moura. And of course, what good would a celebration in your honor be without your mom? Hilton's mama, Teresita, seemed overjoyed as she posed with her son on the red carpet showing off one of the many good mom-characteristics: pride.

When books were signed and photos taken Hilton joined the rest of his guests and family at the MARTINI bar to celebrate.

Congrats Perez!

Get the Beauty Look: Julia Stiles at the 2011 Emmys!

Julia Stiles was a bright spot at the 2011 Emmys' in her Georges Hobeika Couture dress.  However, it wasn't just her dress that looked glam, thanks to celeb makeup artist Brett Freedman, Stiles was glowing.  Below, the beauty genious tells us exactly what he did to get the look!

Julia has such a great face. This is the first time I worked with her. She's a doll.  Loved her classic mermaid dress in soft pewter. To give the look a touch of edge I opted to give her a smokey eye with plum and gunmetal accents to pair with her downplayed mouth.  Bold nails  added crispness and a modern twist. I actually did Julia's hair, too. I Bing'd her looks and decided she was ready for a uber-glam moment. Vintage Hollywood, Veronica Lake waves were in order. Here's the rundown on her make-up look:

Prep: Dermalogica oil free moisturizer for face. I use this as a primer. It's so sheer and leaves the skin with enough dewiness to 'grab' base.

Body bronze: Vanitymark SUMMERSKIN spray on body glisten. Julia already had a glow of a tan. I used SUMMERSKIN to even out her strap marks (not good on strapless!) and give the skin a shimmery finish that photographs so beautifully.

Base: Fresh Umbrian Clay in Sun Empress. I like the soft lift of color this bronzy shade gives.

Concealer: Laura Mercier Camo. Perfect, moveable coverage. Great for under the hot lights of the red carpet. I also used around mouth and along the top of her brows to crisp up the line and make pop (subtly).

Powder: Laura Mercier loose. Universally flattering and dodges shine beautifully without layering pigment on top of base.

Blush: Maybelline Dream Mousse blush in Soft Plum w/ NARS South Beach cream stick over top. I like the lift of color the mousse blush gives and to amp it up I added the cream stick.  South Beach is the perfect bronzy-plum shade to go with both eyes and lips. Love the light catching shimmer. Gives cheekbones depth.

Eyeshadows: MAC. I used a base of wedge all around eye, on lid and up into crease. I then smudged Quarry over top to deepen and cool down the tone. I then added Sketch just on the lash line, top and bottom and smudged out. I applied Idol Eyes with a damp brush to add glisten and tie in the dress. On the brow bone I used Shroom to pop the tail of the brow.

Liquid liner: Urban Decay in Revolver and Shiseido automatic pen liner in Black. I applied very close to the lash line. I wanted the touch of metallic that this liner gives. Very thin line at the base of lashes is all you need. I used the Shiseido from the mid-eye to the ends, catting out a touch to give eyes lift.

Mascara: Benefit. They're Real. When doing a smokey eye it's super important to have a very black, very vivid lash line. I curled, applied 3 coats of mascara, then curler again to get ultimate pop!

Brow: Vanitymark pencil in Blondie. Warm, taupe-y shade that gives just enough shape to brows without looking hard or ashy.

Lips: Laura Mercier lip liner in Plumberry. I applied all over Julia's lips to give color, definition and to lay the tone down for the lipstick that I was applying  as stain, rather than full on from the lube. To give the lipstick a touch of light catching shimmer I used Elizabeth Arden's Starlight lipstick and instructed Julia to apply with fingers after a full application of the pencil.

Nails: OPI The One That Got Away. Love the deep burgundy/plum with a touch of metallic to keep the nails looking modern and naughty.

Are you Ready to Break the Fashion Rules this Fall?

Saturday, September 17, 2011

Ok, so I'm a little behind, about two months, but who's counting.  InStyle's August article 10 New Style Statements was all about breaking the so called fashion rules and as I read each of the rules to be broken I had strong opinions regarding each...what do you think?

#1 - Match your shoes to your bag and your clothing.
...ick, I despise this rule and as of now, unless it's black pumps with black trousers, you'll not catch me sporting it.  Life is more interesting when it's a bit mixed up, don't you think?

#2 - Wear summer fabrics in winter.
...L-O-V-E love it!  This only makes room for lots of fun layers, with mixed up textures and possibly patterns.

#3 - Go big, really big.
...hmmm this could work but also has potential disaster written all over it.  Think about your silhouette here ladies.  Exaggerated jackets won't work on everyone.

#4 - Try lots of barrettes at once.
...adorable.  Hair accessories can be difficult.  When trying to avoid same old same old, they can sometimes come off as crazy town.  This is simple yet unique and is easy to pull off.

#5 - Use a single color around your eye.
...it's alright, but nothing earth shattering, especially when it's recommended to finish with black liner and mascara.

#6 - Shop the boys department.
...this is new?  I've been doing this since "boyfriend" made it's debut.  The boy's department at Marshall's is SO much cheaper than purchasing a designer ladies' boyfriend look.

#7 - Embrace culottes.
...oh-how-I-adore.  There's obviously a very retro element here.  And hey, I'm all for reinventing a classic.

#8 - Mix black and brown.
...again, I feel those in-the-know have been doing this for awhile and it looks phenom.  So to all of you women who still are anti this look get with it!  You can even dare to where white after Labor Day!

#9 - Grow your nails long.
...def looks good with the two-tone nail trend that I also love right now.  But it doesn't work for me.  If it works for you, rock it!

#10 - Shine during the day.
...so true!  Patent and sequins have established themselves in ready-to-wear in so many ways.  I am all for glamming up our day looks, too boring makes for a boring day and who wants that?

NARS and Marc Jacobs Prep for Spring!

Friday, September 16, 2011

True, we might be at the edge of our seat during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week eagerly anticipating the arrival of each new piece, but where would those spring clothes be without a fresh spring makeup look to back them up?

Designer Marc Jacobs tabbed NARS Cosmetics to complete the looks for his Spring 2012 Runway Show.  Below, find out everything you need to know about the look, including a Q&A with the genius himself, the Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics, François Nars.

TREND: Strong eyes, glowing skin and nude, glossy lips

INSPIRATION & LOOK: “Marc had a lot of images of Patsy Klein, Amy Winehouse, and Cowboy Kate, a book from the 60's whose character Kate had heavy eyelashes," said Founder and Creative Director François Nars. "The complexion is meant to look like it's glowing, like the girls have been dancing, and by eliminating the blush it gives a strange, otherworldly effect. The focus was really on the eye, with a well-defined brow. The combination of different touches creates a decadent, French sensuality and makes the girls more like characters."

Products Used:

FACE
· Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer – new for Spring 2012; for now try a light application of Sheer Glow Foundation

BROWS
· Pandora Duo Eyeshadow (on brows)

EYES
      · Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara

LIPS

All products, except where noted, are available at narscosmetics.com.

What kind of look did you want to create for Marc's show?

Marc showed me images of Amy Winehouse, Patsy Klein, and Sweet Charity - all of whom had inspired him. Because the girls are to be staring into the eyes of the audience when the curtain opens, we decided to focus on the eyes. We were inspired by this book from the 1960s, Cowboy Kate, whose character wore false eyelashes and Marc mentioned Bob Fosse (the choreographer) and so it was really important to make the girls look like dancers, to treat them like characters not models. The skin is meant to look like it is dewy, like the girls have been dancing - it's very Cabaret. We used the new Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer instead of foundation.

What beauty technique did you use to bring Marc's vision to life?

We used three pairs of false eyelashes for each girl! We actually had to cut them very precisely. The inner corners of one pair were cut off and applied to the inner corners. Then, we cut the remaining two pairs in half and used the outer halves on the outer corners, not at the same time of course. We applied one set, and then followed with the next.

What kind of affect does this create?

It makes the eyes look really full along the outer corners. It's very decadent, very French, very Marc. We used Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner to line the eyes and eliminate the space between the lashes and the lash line. And then applied Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara for additional emphasis.

What about the rest of the look - especially the brows? They are very defined.

In order to keep the focus on the eyes, we needed to create a frame around them, which is exactly what brows do to the face. We made them very dark with the black side of Pandora Duo Eyeshadow, so that they look like dancers. In the past we've always done really minimal brows or bleached them completely so this was different for us. The brow is sharply defined from inner to outer ends. It's very monochromatic.

Hence the reason for no blush and nude lips?

Yes- there is no color. The lips have Madere Pure Matte Lipstick applied for a nude, very couture look and topped it with Striptease Lip Gloss for shine. And absolutely no blush- when you look at the girls, it's really like you are looking at a black and white film - there is no color.

You mention Amy Winehouse- what about Amy inspired the look exactly?

The look for Marc was very similar to Amy's in that the skin is transparent. The direct inspiration was not a literal reference but to evoke the overall feeling or essence of her. The hair, the lashes and also her skin. She never wore a lot of foundation; just eye makeup.

What Could Be: 2011 Emmy Beauty Predictions

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

The Emmy's so easily bring out the best in Hollywood.  And while the dresses are certainly the focal point, their glam factor would take a major hit if it weren't for the finishing touches - i.e. hair and makeup!  Our favorite celeb makeup artist, Brett Freedman teams up with mizu hairstylist (NYC) Ashley Hanna to discuss what could be for those who sizzled last year - Sofia, Tina, Christina, Kate and Mariska.

Sofia Vergara (nominated for Modern Family)
MAKEUP: Last year, Sofia did a tumbly hair and dewey/bronzey story. I loved the naughty sex appeal of it. This year it would be smart for Sofia to do a more polished, classic Hollywood look. Deep side parted, Veronica Lake sleek with a garnet red lip with golden shimmer. I'd love to see her mix a touch of pewter into her eye make up and a stronger liquid liner winged out a touch. A Colombian Jessica Rabbit!

HAIR: Sofia should wear her hair up for a change! Wearing her hair up would be out of her comfort zone but a nice break from her usual sexy bombshell look. A switch up with a modern hairstyle this year would really bring out more of her natural beauty!

Tina Fey
(nominated for 30 Rock)
MAKEUP: I'm a huge fan of the side swept bang from 2010. I'd like to see that return with the hair down with a touch of bed head texture. Smudgy but crisp eyes with a mix of matte and shimmer shadows framed by lots of lashes. Cheeks and lips nude/fleshy to give our fave funny gal a Bond girl finish.

HAIR: I want to see Tina in a style that’s a little bit rock and roll meets Roman princess. Something soft but with lots of texture. It would be nice to see her work a bold hairstyle for once.

Christina Hendricks
(nominated for Mad Men)
MAKEUP: The secret with the cast of Mad Men is to make them look modern but not too daring that people feel they look better in their period-set show. I'd love for Christina to do a sleek ponytail. A piece added will give a nice theatrical lilt and balance her curvy shape. Stay in the neutral and honey tones for lips and cheeks. Eyes will be bold in pewter and ebony. With her bisque-like skin, a little will go a long way to give her eyes pop.

HAIR: Since she is always wearing her hair curly and very 1950’s – esque, I would like to see her style her hair in a totally different way. Something sleek would balance out her curvy figure - whether it be down and straight or a sleek ponytail. A clip on bang might also be a fun option to make her look very modern!

Kate Winslet
(nominated for Mildred Pierce)
MAKEUP: Playing a poor, hard working mother gives Kate a terrific chance to really give glam. I'd love to see her hair up
and back with texture to give a modern, fashion edge. Sparse eyes in champagne and taupe paired with a strong, structured brow and lash line. A dramatic mouth would be nice to see. A satin finish plum or wine shade would be a scene stealer!

HAIR: I want to see her hair up! Something very sleek and classic would fit her style best, too much texture wouldn’t work for Kate. I would keep it simple with a ponytail or even a soft ballerina bun.

Mariska Hargitay
(nominated for Law and Order: SVU)
MAKEUP: I love Mariska's style. Clean and polished. For this year's show I'd love her to embrace her sexy side. Full bodied hair with a touch of naughty waves. I'd love to see a smokey eye in an unusual shade, like burgundy. If paired with charcoal liner and lashes. it can give the eyes a vivid, bold look. She can ground that with a soft caramel mouth and fleshy cheeks that have a touch of shimmer to give a dewy sheen. Pretty!

HAIR: I'd like to see her with her hair off her face, maybe half up and half down. With her hair all down, it tends to overtake her dress and entire look, she has a beautiful face and sometimes she needs to show that off!

What is it about a good dance flick that seems to get people to flock to theaters in droves?  From Fame to Dirty Dancing to of course, Footloose - we adore them - and with eager anticipation we're awaiting the October 14th release of the remake of the latter, Footloose.  Big names likes Julianne Hough and Dennis Quaid mesh with newcomers Kenny Wormald and Ser'Darius Blain in this updated classic, introducing it to a whole new generation of soon-to-be fans.  Mr. Blain, takes on the role of Woody, the football captain who, like the rest of the town's teens, want to dance the occasional night away - although cutting-a-rug has officially been banned from their Texas town of Bomont.  Of course that doesn't sit well with the group of high-schoolers and drama ensues in their effort to repeal the no-dancing law.  Keep reading as Blain, who graduated in 2009 from the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, was generous enough to share his thoughts on everything from the remake to his style, convincing us this will not be the last we see or hear from him.

Both fans of the original and an entire new generation are exited for the Footloose remake.  What can you tell us about it?  Unfortunately I can't tell you ANYTHING about the movie.  Leave me alone people!  In all honesty, one of the special things about our film is that it pays homage to the original by maintaining some of the classic music and iconic scenes.  In the same breath, it also has its own identity with some storyline changes and new characters.  Like the original, the soundtrack is SICK!

Had you seen the original Kevin Bacon before filming the remake?  I always remember hearing Footloose when I was younger and I was familiar with some of the scenes, but I never actually watched the movie completely until I realized I could possibly be a part of the remake.  I rented it after my second callback.

Tell us about your character, Woody - is there more to him than football?  Woody is not only captain of the football team but he's a rebellious teenager like many others in Bomont.  Dancing is definitely a BIG part of who he is...with that said, Woody definitely cuts a lil' rug!

You've been described as shy in your youth.  Do you still possess that trait or do you officially qualify as an extrovert?  I was an extremely shy child, almost to the point of social akwardness.  But as I got older (16+), I began to gain confidence through theater and sports.  I still get nervous in some public and social situations but I've learned to tackle it head on.  Red carpet events used to freak me out but now I just pretend I'm on stage.  I can be outgoing amongst my friends but at the end of the day I still maintain some of my shyness and I'm ok with that.

Do you pay attention to trends and fashion, or do you "do your own thing" and hope it turns out for the best?  I mostly wear what I feel comfortable in but I think everyone, to an extent, follows trends.  I generally tend to like more classic looks and styles.  I'm a jeans and t-shirt guy in the day (with a sneaker addiction) and a button-down shirt and dress shoes at night.  I dig fashion but I don't care about name brands as long as I feel good.

What is date night like with Ser'Darius?  Though I haven't had many dates lately, I definitely love to "wine and dine," literally.  I'm a bit of a food and wine connesieur so I love taking a special lady to a nice restaurant with a great wine list and talking the night away.  Food is sexy and music enhances that experience, so live music is also a must.  I tend to prefer live Jazz or even a comedy show to loosen any tension or jitters.

So do you have any favorite wines?  I'm a huge fan of champagne (Roger Vivier or Piper Heidseck) or any other sparkling wines.  There's something about the bubbles that just make you feel good!  My friends always make fun of me for being a 6'4" 220 pounds and sipping champagne (laughs).  I always enjoy a glass of Robert Mondavi Cabernet or a nice Pinot Noir from time to time.

You mentioned you like jazz - anyone in particular?  My favorite jazz musicians are very classic like Dizzie Gilespie, Charlie "The Bird" Parker, Miles Davis, "The Duke" Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Kenny G.  I'd even put down the King of Soul (James Brown) in that category because of his great band.  Jazz is where most of our music is derived from so it's important to appreciate it.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?  Hmmm...it's actually a scripture my mom used to quote me: "Commit your plans to God and you will succeed." (Psalms 16:3) and don't worry about the things you can't control!

Dolce & Gabbana Celebrate Fashion's Night Out

Monday, September 12, 2011

Celebrating Fashion's Night Out was the perfect occasion for Dolce & Gabbana to throw a soiree fit for the kings and queens of celebrity-ville and a just-right venue for previewing Passion Duo Lipstick at an event sponsored by MARTINI.

While Justin Beiber ultimately stole the show, other celebs in attendance included Usher, soccer superstar Thierry Henry, Tyson Beckford, Kelly Rutherford, Anna Wintour, Rose McGowan, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, La La Vazquez, Carmelo Anthony, Sohpia Bush and Leann Rimes.

Tweens with a case of Bieber Fever were brought to tears as they waited in line to have their $195 Dolce & Gabbana FNO t-shirts signed by the "One Less Lonely Girl" singer.  And for those VIP's wanting to escape the throngs of screaming girls, the MARTINI-sponsored cocktail bar on the second floor was the place to be - complete with Asti and Sparkling Rose.

Fashionable party-goers had their makeup touched up by makeup artists at the lipstick and grooming bar followed by the opportunity to have their fresh faces and pretty pouts captured in a portrait shot by celebrity photographer Roxanne Lowit.

Wrapping around 11:00 p.m. DJ Ruckus and Hannah Bronfman provided beats throughout the evening and Asher Roth even gave a special performance prior to the party's conclusion.

All proceeds for the evening benefited "Pencils for Promise," and organization committed to supporting a world with greater educational opportunities for all.

Brett's Beauty Battleship: VMA Edition

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Fabulous-ness - the only way to describe this year's VMA's!  Below, everyone's favorite Hollywood makeup artist, Brett Freedman, tells us who stole his heart, who broke his heart (gasp, how dare they), and who was somewhere in between in this edition of Brett's Beauty Battleship!

"MTV's Video Music Awards is in my periscope. Hot hair and make-up looks that kept me just as entertained as the performances. Here's who sailed to beauty victory and who took a torpedo to their hull!"

Direct hit!

Kelly Rowland. This is what the MTV Video Music Awards is all about! Something eye-popping that's both young and sexy. Love the solid fringe of bang that grazes not her brows, but her lash line. Neutrals used in an evening, sultry way. A subtle smokey eye downplayed lips and cheeks give a clean, confident look. I raise the flag to her glam team for knowing when a gal is showing that much cleavage that the hair and make-up need to step back a touch so as not to look overt. Brava Kelly!

Near miss:

Adele. Great voice...rickety hair and make-up. We're talking red carpet here so she won't get the extra points from the pulled back hair she sported for her performance. I really like the IDEA of what they were doing here. A slightly 60's/Bewitched vibe is perfect for Adele. The execution, unfortunately lacked pristine finish. Strip lashes can rarely be worn full width across the eye. You have to either cut them or find a set that is graduated on the inner corner side. A thick, solid lash applied from the tear duct to the end flattens the eye and looks too costume-y, not sexy. Loved the apricot gloss and lighter brows, but they felt very squared off and filled in. A touch softer on that shape would have given the same structure but not distracted from the eyes. Big, theatrical hair is great, but brush through the pieces and spray lightly. It looks a little ropey and matted with hairspray. Adele, I'm ordering you to be hosed down on deck and soften up!

Sweatheart, you sunk!

Nicki Minaj- I hate to write this because I adore her and anyone that gets adventurous in their look. I feel that Nicki, like Katy Perry, does a colorful, frothy exaggeration of feminine beauty. Neapolitan ice cream shades used in a winking style. Tonight ,I feel like her look felt a little desperate. Nicki, you're already the gal of the moment...no need to amp everything up. Sometimes more is less. I felt she was trying to be the black Lady GaGa. The look didn't feel fresh or progressive. Mounds of Dr. Suess hairpieces stacked up, thick blue shadow and candy pink lips. It looked a little like an easter egg fight!  The Fix: Find one off kilter thing and make that the focal point. Doing an over the top hairpiece is fine, but do something progressive and modern. Maybe a wig made of yarn that was like a beautifully crafted art piece? Colorful make-up is fun. Do something sheerer, more modern on parts of the face to give our eyes a rest. The thick, Sherwin Williams style actually is painful to look at. We all have the same, instant visceral reaction when we see someone who's trying too hard. You want to surprise and delight. Sorry NM...you're in my crosshairs this week!

Permission to board:

GaGa's guy pal, Joe. At first I was thinking, "Why is Ralph Macchio singing GaGa's new single". Smile. Here are my style notes, Mr. Calderone. Too much hair. I get it, you're doing a 50's greaser thing. Take a note from Bruno Mars and polish up the pompadour to a sleeker style. Shave. Buddy, 'ur on national television on behalf of your gal...pull out a razor for it! Stop smoking. I read in Cosmo that smoking is bad for you. Tell GaGa, too. Wink.

Rave Reviews for In The Hive's Jonathan McDaniel

Friday, September 2, 2011

He may have burst onto the scene as teen-dream Devon Carter on That's So Raven but Jonathan McDaniel has taken on a more mature role as Xtra Keys, a gang member who's learned to survive the streets in In The Hive, directed by Robert Townsend.  Collecting rave reviews, In The Hive is being tauted as this year's Precious.  And of course while we hate to brag, how lucky are we to have had the opportunity to talk to this 26 year-old star-on-rise, not only about his latest flick, but style (of course) and future goals?  Humble, modest AND easy-on-the-eyes are qualities not easily found these days, but keep reading, as Mr. McDaniel proves that while he may be a star, he's far from conceited which in our eyes, makes him all the more likable!

You currently star in Robert Townsend’s In the Hive.  What was it like being on set with the likes of not only him, but also co-stars like Vivica A. Fox and Loretta Divine?  This film, being able to work with Mr. Townsend and act alongside veteran actors like Vivica A. Fox and Loretta Divine, has been a huge blessing in my life and I’m truly grateful for this wonderful opportunity.

Have you had time to reflect on the movie since wrapping and premiering? How do you feel you grew as an actor?  I’m still wondering how we did this amazing film in just 18 days . I’ve got to honestly say, it was so rewarding and worth every long day on set when I got to see the response at ABFF to all of the great performances!  God is good.

I love the aviators you donned on the red carpet premiere of In the Hive (at the ABFF)!  How would you describe your style? What are some of your key pieces?  Thank you and I love those glasses too. My style is unmatched and never duplicated because I’m always being me at all times, being me is my style. I always wear my bullets for peace necklace because it’s a part of my fashion statement wherever I go.  I’m pro-peace instead of anti-war!  Peace and love.

Your ideal date would be…My house, dinner made by me. Yes, I cook, and for the most beautiful woman in the world (inside and out). I love to cook for those I care about, especially my lady.

You love to see the ladies wearing…Less make-up and one-of-a-kind style!  I love natural beauty.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  I will be shooting 4-5 films a year, still recording music, which I love to do when I’m not on set.  Happily married and enjoying my life as I am now.

Top 10 Spa Treatment Trends

Thursday, September 1, 2011

This kneading motion de-knots and promotes blood
circulation.  Photo courtesy Spa Week®.
August 30, 2011: Spa Week, the largest and most successful Spa Marketing Event in the country, has leveraged its exclusive relationships with hundreds of its spa partners to extract privileged industry information in order to release the most accurate and trust-worthy assessment of the direction of spa services to date. Spa Week is excited to announce the definitive list of the latest in spa treatment trends in honor of the 15th installment of the Spa Week Event. Taking place nationwide from October 10th -16th, hundreds of spas, wellness facilities and fitness centers will offer 2-3 exclusive services for a discounted price of just $50 each.

SpaWeek.com will launch on September 12th with the complete list of spa participants and their Spa Week treatments. It is encouraged that spa-goers sign up in advance and book their appointments immediately for the most desired services and times.

Without further adieu, Spa Week presents the Top 10 Spa Treatment Trends for the Fall 2011 Event:

1. Shirodhara

We know what you’re thinking: Shiro-whata? Don’t try this at dinner, but drizzling warm sesame oil onto one’s forehead is extremely therapeutic. Shirodhara, which dates back to India circa 5000 years ago, is now being incorporated into more and more spa menus, and seen as an add-on to Western treatments like body wraps and Swedish Massages.

It’s the good kind of oil spill: The ritual’s steady spilling brings physical and emotional balance while giving hair an extreme conditioning. Shirodhara is known to calm nerves, release stored emotions, purify the mind, and fight fatigue, anxiety, insomnia and headaches.

2. Bamboo Massage

De-knot your body by getting rolled out like a sugar cookie with a Bamboo rolling pin-esque Massage. The massage therapist will knead, glide and roll a Bamboo reed along shoulders, back and legs to pamper and penetrate tense muscles.

The benefits of Bamboo-ing: Bamboo Massage promotes blood circulation, improves sensory nerve perception, and does lymphatic drainage. Bamboo also symbolizes longevity, luck and strength, making it a somewhat spiritual spa experience.

3. Cupping and Gua Sha

Did you ever wish you could literally suck or scrape the pain and soreness right out of your body? With the ancient Chinese healing therapies of cupping and Gua Sha, you can!

How it works: Cupping uses suction on the skin’s surface to “suck” stagnant blood from deep beneath the surface, and Gua Sha “scrapes” the skin to mobilize blood flow in a similar fashion. Both alternative therapies provide extreme pain and tension relief, especially on the back. These therapies are becoming more and more mainstream, despite the temporary bruising it causes, as new consumers experience their drastic benefits.

4. Acupressure

No pressure to get pricked here. Acupressure employs the concept of acupuncture, (the granddaddy of healing) only rather than needles, it uses physical pressure of hands, elbows and other devices. Practitioners target specific points along the body’s energy pathways, or “meridians,” to encourage healing and balance in the individual.

What it’s good for: Relief from allergies, chronic arthritis pain and migraines; pain-sufferers can reap the benefits of this ancient Chinese medicine without fear of being poked.

5. Boozing with Benefits

It’s always happy hour at the spa, but more and more spas are incorporating alcohol into their treatment offerings.

On the cocktail menu: Champagne and wine-infused treatments can smooth skin tissue, stimulate blood flow and are a powerful ingredient in anti-aging. Beer yeast is rich in elements that increase skin elasticity and improve acne by suppressing sebum. Even Scotch Whiskey is showing up on the spa scene; it’s full of sugars, minerals and vitamin B6, giving it excellent hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties.

6. Shellac Attack

There’s been a lot of hype around UV Manicures, especially the popular Shellac Manicure since it first launched last Spring – the hard lustrous finish! The zero dry-time! The 14-day no chipping/smudging/denting promise! And did you see the Shellac flash mob?  A cross between gels and a regular manicure, products like Shellac and Axxium are certainly no fad, as the color selection gets larger and trendier each season.

Why Shellac?  Spa-goers love Shellac Manicures because they get a long lasting, no-mess result, and spas love them just as much because it brings in new clients and revenue, without increasing the service time. Shellac Manicures are a win-win!

7. Men’s Treatments

Did you know men make up for 31% of active spa-goers? And did you know the most common spa packages offered are for men, with 45% of U.S. spas offering such a package? By incorporating no-frills, guy-friendly scents like sandalwood, mustard seed, eucalyptus and thyme, spas are able to successfully market to men.

What services are considered guy-friendly?  Hot Shaves, Gentlemen’s Facials, Golf Ball Massages and more have enticed male consumers to experiment and experience the health benefits of the spa just as frequently as their female counterparts (who, oftentimes, are the ones who got them hooked!).

8. Mobile Spas (not to be confused with Spa Week’s Mobile App)

With more and more mobile food establishments rolling around the country serving gourmet dishes and desserts, spas aren’t far behind. One of the emerging trends is getting your massage, facial, or other spa service street-side, in a spa on wheels.

Why go mobile?  Mobile spas are in high demand as they conveniently bring the day spa experience right to your home, office or venue. With gas prices at an all-time high, the mobile spa experience saves time and money, and is now a popular and sought-after addition to wellness and bridal parties and even corporate events.

9. Deep Sea Spa-ing

The word “spa” is derived from water, so it is a wonder that water-based spa treatments are so often overlooked. The Jacuzzi is perhaps the most well-known version of “hydro-therapy,” but more and more aquatic treatments like Hammam Rituals, Vichy Showers and Watsu are a booming trend, especially in hotel spas.

How to H2O: Each of these water treatments utilized hydro-thermal therapy to relax tight and sore muscles and promote smooth and cleansed skin all while stimulating blood circulation to promote healing. Hammam Rituals combine heat, aromatherapy, steam, bubbles, water and mud to cleanse the skin and detoxify the body. A Vichy Shower is a unique aquatic therapy that invigorates your body while laying flat under powerful water jets, inspired by treatments used in the French city, Vichy. Watsu, short for water Shiatsu, is a massage performed in a warm, shallow pool. As the water gently cradles the guest so the massage therapist can work the full 360 degrees of your body.

10. Spa with a Conscience

“Green” spas and treatments are thriving right now in the industry; spa owners are making critical revisions by incorporating renewable energy, holistic and eco-friendly services and indigenous ingredients into their businesses, and it’s paying off in the long run.

But how?  More and more consumers are considering a spa’s environmental philosophy, along with price and location in their decision to visit a new spa. Spas are practicing conservation by purchasing organic linens, biodegradable aesthetic gauze and eco-friendly cleaning supplies to keep each guest sanitary.
